Eksyjä is a performance by illustrator Pete Revonkorpi and musician Henri Lindström that combines live music and digital painting. It is a story about birth, side-steps and death.

In Eksyjä the birth of the painting is the actual artwork itself.

Eksyjä will have the premiere in Yläkaupungin Yö arts festival on May 16^th 2009. It has been supported by Live Herring work and Jyväskylä Art Museum.

Live Herring workgroup invited media artists Mari Keski-Korsu and Mika Meskanen to carry out Pimp My Passport workshop to Jyväskylä on May 16^th , 2009 as part of the program of Yläkaupungin Yö arts festival. Workshop will take a place in Jyväskylä University Main Building lobby from 4 p.m. to 00.00 a.m.

Pimp My Passport workshop examines DIY and hacking prospects as well as control and privacy issues of the RFID passports currently being rolled out throughout the European Union. It also plays around with the notion of nationality and its symbols - seeking new ways to signal identity by “pimping” personal travel documents. In workshop we are crafting protective “Faraday cage” passport covers for passports.

Although dealing with heavy subject matter like electronic privacy, big brother and nationality, Pimp My Passport is a playful, hands-on project that anyone can take part of. It is realized in Jyväskylä as non stop workshop so you are welcome to join when it’s good for you. If you wish, please take your passport with you for testing your passport cover.

Levels-gamehappening will be arranged this year for the second time. Levels takes place at JAMK University of applied sciences´s IT-Dynamo in Lutakko. Two-day seminar- and fairhappening will encapture five floors and offers lots of game related action for all age groups.

In gamepoints there are dozens of games with different themes ready to be played. You can for example play playstation 3-games, Warhammer, Lord of the Rings or different kinds of role- or strategic games in Levels.  For young kids there are for example Aladdin and Donald Duck who adventure in the world of board games.  In every gamepoint there is a personal adviser who helps and gives hints on how to get started with the particular game.

A bunch of first line finish game researchers and experts will give a lecture in the seminar. This years themes for Levels are social playing and media education. In Saturday You can for example listen to Eero Tuominen´s aspects about the ethics of game industry (10.40 am) or get familiar with Marko Ahonen´s thoughts of revolutional game console playstation-2 (1.00 pm). In Sunday Terhi Luukkanen gives lecture which subject is Digital games advancing children´s and youth´s wellbeing (1.40 pm). An interesting perspective for the day´s media education theme is also represented by the Jyväskylä University´s researchers Tuula Nousiainen (10.10 am) and Jukka Varsaluoma (2.30 pm).

Gamepoints will be open through all the happening. You can choose those parts of the seminar You are interested in and get to know the gamepoints and other activity the Levels has to offer.

There is a free admission for Levels-gamehappening.

The submission deadline is on 16th August!
Submit your work before 4th of August if you want a possibility that your work will be approved and released in the press release on 21th of August. The rest of the approved works will be announced on 1st of October.

The Alternative Party in a nutshell

The Alternative Party is a demoparty and a festival of digital culture. It gathers together creative programmers, visualists, musicians, designers, researchers and passionate enthusiasts. The number of visitors this year is estimated to be over 1000.

We offer world-beating activities like music shows, keynote talks, demoscene competitions, a computer exhibition, seminars, workshops and an arts exhibition. In addition, the event serves as a welcoming meeting place for people in the domain and encourages its attendees to think creatively and open-mindedly. No need to go to church for a sermon of guilt! CREEPY CHRISTIAN CINEMA is a collection of obscure films designed to not only hammer in the message about the “big guy above”, but also to be entertaining and “hip”. Shown in church basements and Christian movie theatres, these have been nearly impossible to see, until now!

Highlights include a Christian rip off of Hanna Barbara’s Animated “Scooby Doo” entitled PHANTOM LAKE (1984, Dir: Ken Anderson) which has a Sunday School class learn that God can protect them from “ghosts” during a camping trip, while CHAMPIONS (1984) pumps bad Christian music videos along with professional NFL Football Player Neil Lomax teaching kids how to deal with peer pressure, and be “cool, and love the Lord”. The pitchy films end with the unbelievable “Nikolai” (1986, Dir: Tony Tew) which deals with the USSR and the evils of communism (and Young Pioneer Camps) when the KGB pressure young Nikolai to give up his faith, and be a good comrade. These films, plus more strangeness from the world of “film-making for Jesus”, including an introduction and prizes by Dion Conflict (Hunka Junk series). Hallelujah!

REINDEER ON THE ROAD

An expedition collects artists to explore nationality of a tourist in Canary Islands 3. – 10.4.2009

mikroPaliskunta is a series of interdisciplinary expeditions exploring contemporary imagined nation called Finland and its eco-social changes in a sustainable way. mikroPaliskunta has already made two expeditions: across Finland from north to south by a biodiesel car with a stuffed reindeer in 2006 and around Berlin by bicycles in Germany in 2007. This spring, the group starts a series of expeditions themed ”The Finnish on Holiday”. The first expedition in the hell triangle of tourism is made to Canary Islands - the ever-popular holiday destination and a border shore for African refugees risking their lives to enter European Union. Following two expeditions head to entertain centres in Vantaa and Lapland in Finland

- The Finnish culture is moved to warm climate in Canary Islands. How does tourism intensify presented national identity in tourists themselves and in local people? Also, the affects of mass tourism from perspective of economic depression and ecological awareness is an interesting subject matter, explains media artist and member of the expedition Mari Keski-Korsu.

mikroPaliskunta website is renewed for the Canary Islands expedition. As with the earlier expeditions, also this expedition can be tracked almost in real-time. The artists of the expedition work with their own individual themes producing articles, photographs, videos, maps and a series of performances about coffee drinking as a social phenomenon. All the materials about this and the past expeditions are exhibited at the website.

Members of the expedition include media artists Mari Keski-Korsu and Mika Meskanen, photographer Eija Mäkivuoti, author and scriptwriter Taina West. Researcher of sustainable consumption and production Satu Lähteenoja is a special guest of the expedition.

Background info

Paliskuntas are local nodes to manage reindeer herding area. Each paliskunta consists of reindeer herders that herd their reindeers in the paliskunta’s area. Paliskuntas have existed since 1898. There are about 60 paliskuntas in Finland. mikroPaliskunta name’s origins lay in a reindeer as a mythical symbol, production animal and a mascot for tourism in Finland. A stuffed reindeer that has been travelling with mikroPaliskunta collected members to its her from other stuffed reindeers standing still in front of souvenir shops. The reindeer list can be seen in first expedition’s website.

mikroPaliskunta I expedition travelled across Finland from Nuorgam to Hanko by biodiesel car in summer 2006. The stuffed reindeer was a protagonist for the travel. The whole trip was documented with a camera taking images in few minutes intervals and creating an image line with GPS coordinates covering the country. This image line formed an interface to the materials of the expedition. The team produced image, text and video materials with different types of themes. mikroPaliskunta also organised happenings along the way and local artists participated with their own interpretations of the themes. These happening included public discussions, as well.

In summer 2007, mikroPaliskunta team drove around Berlin for 250 kilometres by bicycles exploring the special (historical) relationship in between imaginary nations called Finland and Germany. Unfortunately, the stuffed reindeer couldn’t take part of this expedition due to practical reasons, but this was the first travel to present Little Finnish Reindeer – a travel light reindeer. The expedition was documented in different kinds of web 2.0 services and materials can be found with a tag ’mikropaliskunta’.

GAME PICTURES-exhibition will be arranged as a part of Levels-game happening.

Images for the exhibition are being received before April 21st 2009.

Levels-game happening takes place 25.-26.4 in Jyväskylä at JAMK University of Applied Sciences IT-Dynamo building. As a part of the happening there will be an exhibition with theme of images inspired by computer games. Images sent for exhibition will also be published in web gallery, which will be open also after the happening. The exhibition is arranged by Live Herring workgroup (the regional artist of film and media culture in Central-Finland), in co-operation with Levels-game happening.

Technique for making images is free. Images can be entirely computer made, photos companying computer graphics and photo or traditional photos – or for example colored pencil drawings.

Note that You can´t copy material for Your images straight from the games because of the copyright laws. What You can do is for example re-illustrate the game world and it characters and put game heroes in new imagined situations. Your image doesn´t have to base on any existing game. Neither doesn´t it have to necessarily represent anything. Instead You can illustrate the feeling of the game or make decorative compositions about the characters of games. Use Your imagination!

We don´t publish any images containing raw violence, anything else offensive material or prohibited under 18 years old. There are no other limitations for taking part in the exhibition.

Images sent by email will be printed in A4-format for the exhibition.
Authors name or pseudonym will be disclosed alongside the images and if wanted, website address and email can also be shown.
