Live Herring

Animated Movement was organized September 24 - 26, 2009 in Jyväskylä (Time of Dance Festival). There were nearly 200 visitors and about one hundred dances made in an event planned by Matti Niinimäki and Päivi Hintsanen and produced by Live Herring. Animated Movement workshop
The Jyväskylä City Library, Pieni luentosali from September 24th to September 26th 2009

In this year’s program of the Jyväskylä based Time of Dance Festival there is a novel workshop that combines dance and media art: Live Herring work group organizes Animated Movement workshop in cooperation with Time of Dance Festival. The workshop is an open to all, walk-in workshop. It is connected to the theme of dance and technology which has been part of the festival program from the very first Time of Dance Festival.

In Animated Movement workshop participants create an animation character for example by drawing it by hand or by computer or by cutting it from cardboard. After choosing music and landscape to his/her animated dance, participant goes to make movements in a separated space. That movement is shown in an animated environment as a dance of the animated character which the participant has made!

Workshop takes place at The Jyväskylä City Library in the Small Lecture Room (Pieni luentosali):
Thursday September 24th from 11 am to 4 pm
Friday September 25th from 11 am to 6.30 pm
Saturday September 26th from 11 am to 3.30 pm

Live Herring will organize Animated Movement workshop from September 24th to September 26th 2009. The workshop will be open to all walk-in workshop and it is organized as part of Tanssin Aika -festival. Workshop participants create an animation character for example by drawing it by hand or by computer or by cutting it from cardboard. After choosing music and landscape to his/her animated dance, participant goes to make movements to the separated space. Movement of the participant is shown in animation environment as a dance of his/her animation character!

We need assistants for the workshop!
To keep the workshop going smoothly we need voluntary people to assist us with scanning and placing characters into the Animata program. For that you don’t need previous experience, because there will be organized a free course for Animata animation program basics for the people interested. The course is organized few days before workshop, on Mon September 21st 2009 from 4 pm to 8 pm and on Tue September 22nd 2009 from 4 pm to 8 pm. The course is organized at the evening so that it would be possible to participate after the school and work.

Animata program can be used both with Mac OS X and Windows and it’s a free open source software that enables real-time animation. In the course you can learn the basics of the Animata program. The teacher is probably the best you can have: Matti Niinimäki has written a tutorial of Animata program and has developed the motion detection system used in this project.

Course will be organized as laptop course: each participant will use his/her own laptop at the course. The Animata program will be installed to the laptops and Matti will help with the possible problems so that the use of Animata program would be as easy as possible also after the course.

There are places for max. 15 participants and few places are still open so if you are interested of learning Animata program and helping in workshop please sign up as soon as possible (the signing up is binding). It is possible to write work and course certificates for workshop assistants.
