Media Art project vol. 1
One goal of the Live Herring working group is to indroduce film and media art projects that are ongoing at the middle of Finland area. Fist one that we idroduce is the Work not Working art project of Rebekah Rousi. Rousi is an Australian born printmedia and performance artist that lives and works in Jyväskylä.
This is how Rousi describes her project:
“Is a mixed blog and performance based project, which entails me, the artist, undertaking various job roles in organisations and companies. It can be classified as a ‘performance by order’ piece, whereby either viewers give suggestions regarding jobs I can apply for (via the blog), or organisations recruit me specifically for the tasks at hand. The piece challenges notions of privileged space as I, an artist will be undertaking other job roles, as an artist.
Thus, the audience/ customers are generally aware that I am an artist, and thus, may leave a message in my ‘guest book’ after their art experience.
The purpose of the project is to look at every facet of work from under employment to over employment (exploitation) and the ways in which our lives and identities are effected… by work. It aims to highlight the individualisation (and personalisation) of the matter of work,
particularly considering the notion that ‘everyone is an artist at what they do’.
The guest book comments as well as photo/video documentation and daily entries will be recorded on the blog. The hope is that through this outlet and material the audience will want to contibute to moulding the artist’s identity…”
